*PUNJAB/DALJEET AJNOHA/June 23
We are workers who came to PEl to pursue our dreams of making a life in Canada. Most of us have spent more than 5 years in Canada and have obtained work permits. PEl was supporting us on our pathway to permanent residence, which would give us the security and confidence to work hard, contribute to our community and eventually build our families here.
Why Protest?
In February, Premier Dennis King changed the rules on how PEI would support Migrant workers. The changes mean that hundreds of workers across
PEI will no longer receive support from the provincial government for our applications to permanent residence or even for an extension of our work permits.
There are many workers who are now unable to apply for permanent residence and many whose work we permits will expire in the coming months. We will be forced to leave the country within 30-60 days if we do not get work permits renewed immediately.
What are we asking?
We are asking the government to honour the commitment that was understood when we started our jobs on PEl, and to grandfather into the provincial immigration program, all the workers who were here prior to the arbitrary rule change in February.
We are asking the government to reverse the exclusion of sales and service workers from the provincial immigration program. If we are good enough to work here on PEl surely we should be good enough to become permanent residents
We are asking the government to support the application for any workers who require a work permit extension.
